A postcard came today. Helen's Bay on the front, a beach on Belfast Lough with grey water and a grey sky, the kind of picture nobody here would put on a postcard. On the back, in capitals:

840 LENGTHS OF 25 M SINCE 8 JAN.
21 KM. 17,090 TO SYDNEY.
LEISURE CENTRE, MON THU SAT. B.

8 January was the second Monday of the year. She has been swimming for two months while I've been looking in the letterbox.

I sat on the front step with it for most of an hour. The neighbour asked if I was all right and I said I was grand, which I haven't said since 1972.

My own book says 308.7 km, with Kirra's green lengths, and my shoulder is still not allowed near the water.

Lachie came straight over after school and made a second pin. Blue. He put it on Belfast and then moved it a tiny bit, up and to the right, because to go from Belfast to Sydney the short way you go north first, over Scotland.
