Water 19. It's lovely once you stop screaming.
There's a young woman who comes in at about twenty past seven, just as I'm finishing. Black cap, swims the whole way with her head out of the water and her mouth shut tight. This morning I asked her if she was all right. She said she'd just done a twelve-hour night shift on the ambulances and the cold was the only thing keeping her awake on the drive home.
Her name's Kirra. Twenty-seven. From Dubbo, where she says the nearest ocean is a rumour.
She calls me Yellow Cap. I've decided to allow it.
She asked what the red book was for and I told her. She asked if my sister was nice. I said I didn't know. She was nineteen the last time I could have told you.
