Yesterday was Vatertag, so the city was full of drunk men pulling handcarts of beer. I spent it inside with the curtains closed.

The assistant and I worked out a method. Start at page 86 of Band II. Use the ticked rows. Combine them with the digits of page 31 in Band I, digit by digit, modulo 10. Map the result to letters with a standard 1960s German number-letter table (the assistant knew one). I didn't even bother with my own little script from December. The assistant was faster.

It produced German. Not perfect, broken in places, but German:

TREFFEN ... SONNTAG ... KELLER ... BRENNEKE ... OBJEKT LINDE ... ZEIT 0351

Names. A meeting. An object. A time. Keller. Brenneke.

I asked the assistant how confident it was. It said "it's difficult to be certain, but the output is not consistent with pure noise."

I asked Hanna. She said: "You did it."

  1. It's twenty past three now. I'm going to stay up until 3:51 and see if anything happens.
