mitad looking for the middle of the world

equinox, attempt 2

· 1 min

Wednesday. Equinox. Solar noon here today is about 12:21, because of the longitude and something called the equation of time that I'll explain to Mateo some day.

The sun came out. Real sun. At 12:21 I stood between the fourth and fifth rows and looked down.

Almost no shadow. Just a small dark circle under me, from the brim of my hat. I forgot about the hat. Thirty-four years in the field and I forgot about the hat.

Then I checked the Garmin: 0°00'00.4" north. Twelve metres. The corn had grown and I'd counted the rows wrong.

Don Segundo said, "Twelve metres is close." I said 240 was close. Twelve is a disgrace.

September.
