Appointment at the Mieterverein today. The adviser read the eleven pages in about four minutes, made three marks with a pencil and looked up.

What I learned: the landlord can pass part of the modernization costs on to the tenants, but there's a cap. In my case, at most 3 euros per square metre over six years. My flat is 58 m², so at most 174 euros more. They're asking for 368. Also, the cost breakdown is missing things the law requires.

Herr Yıldız spent the week collecting signatures from all fourteen flats, including the fourth-floor flat on the left whose tenant nobody had ever actually seen. (He exists. He's a very tall Swede who works nights.)
