At 11:41 the whole office stood around the director's laptop and watched a man in a suit hold up a frame with two characters on it. 令和. Reiwa. The new era starts on May 1, when the new emperor does.
In patent translation this matters more than you'd think. Every Japanese date is "Heisei 31" or "Showa 62", and somebody has to turn it into 2019 or 1987. The director says it will take the country five years to stop writing Heisei on forms. He's already ordered a new date stamp.

I'm sure it was empty when I went to bed, because last night I descaled it with citric acid, rinsed it three times and left it upside down on the drying rack. This morning it was standing on the stove, full to the line, cold.
