the mail
Holiday today, Vernal Equinox Day. It's the middle of higan week, when people visit family graves. The weather agency also declared the cherry blossoms open this morning, because their sample tree at Yasukuni had at least five flowers open. There's an official tree. Bea didn't believe me.
My post box had three things in it, none for me. All for 沢田 清様, Sawada Kiyoshi.
- a postcard from a dentist reminding him of his six-month checkup
- a seed catalogue from a nursery in Chiba, with a blue morning glory on the cover
- a sushi delivery menu with his name printed on the label
I called Tsuchiya-san. He said the family (a nephew, I think) handled everything and nobody set up forwarding. For proper mail you write the reason on the envelope and put it back in a post box.
So I wrote 受取人死亡, "addressee deceased", on the dentist card in my neatest pen. It felt rude to write it to a dentist.
The menu went in the paper recycling. The catalogue is in a shoebox on top of the fridge. I'm not sure why.
