Laughable Loves is finished. Short stories about men behaving badly. Very funny if you are not married to one of them.
For the next one I wanted the old Czech edition from Toronto, from 68 Publishers. In the seventies people smuggled these across the border in their luggage, between the socks. After the market this morning I found a copy at a small antikvariát on Údolní street that I had never noticed before.
The owner is called Tomáš. He is about my age and he does not like Kundera. "He left," he said, as if that settled it. I said many people left. He said yes, and some of them came back, and Kundera did not.
We argued for forty minutes. I bought the book. He gave me a discount "for the entertainment."
It was the first real conversation I've had since October.
